How a shirt should sit on the shoulder
If the seam misses the bone, nothing you do below it will save the fit.
Every fitting starts in the same place. Stand square, arms down, and look at where the shoulder seam lands.
It should sit on the corner of the shoulder bone โ not past it onto the arm, and not short of it. A seam that hangs low reads sloppy no matter how good the cloth is, and one that sits high pulls across the back the moment you reach forward.
This is the one measurement a tailor cannot fix cheaply, which is why we check it before anything else. Sleeve length is easy. Waist is easy. Shoulders are the whole garment.
